About the Program
The Graphic Design program introduces students to all design fundamentals in preparation for careers in the graphic design pathway. This program explores typography, color theory, printing methodologies, critique standards, technical tools, and creativity necessary to be competitive in the graphic design field. The classroom environment is highly hands-on, project, and product-based, and provides students with many opportunities for authentic learning. In addition to learning Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, and XD in a Mac lab, students have access to various professional printers and bindery equipment.
Instructors
Kristen Deveau
Kristen Deveau joined Salem High CTE after 12 years of industry experience as a Graphic and UX (User Experience) Designer. Kristen has worked in many different industries from healthcare to technology, and on a variety of platforms ranging from mobile app design to commercial printing and embedded healthcare monitors. She has spent years focused on speech technology products and closing the gap between outdated digital designs and the technological expectations of today’s mobile devices. In her spare time, Kristen enjoys cooking, calligraphy, and spending time with her husband and two children. She feels fortunate to have the opportunity to teach young people about the plethora of career pathways at their fingertips given an educational foundation in Graphic Design. Design is at the core of everything we use, touch and read and Kristen is enthusiastic about sharing that passion and industry experience with students. Graphic and UX design is a booming career path and Kristen is happy to have the opportunity to share her experience with her students.

Grades 10-12, 2 Credits (EC), Year, Every day
This course provides a project based curriculum designed to include a range of learning activities associated with the graphic and digital design industry. Students work in a professional Mac lab environment with access to the Adobe Creative Suite. Additionally, students will have the ability to have hands-on experience with a digital press, large format printer, multi purpose printer including apparel and adhesives and other equipment relevant to project construction. All projects are industry standard and relevant to career success. Skills developed include learning correct technical composition, graphic design principles, vector/photo manipulations, color theory, digital illustration, critical thinking, problem solving, typography and printing standards. Software skills focus on Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and XD. Students will work on a variety of projects ranging from print design to digital design. Students will develop communication and professional design expectations for client work. Students will develop a portfolio that will range in project type and complexity as the class progresses.

This is the second year of the Graphic Design program. This class will continue to focus on improving and enhancing the technical and execution skills of students. Students will learn about various design styles in history. Advanced software skills and projects will be emphasized as students continue to develop their portfolio, solidify their career plans, and hone their collaborative and project management skills. Students will focus on higher level problem solving involving critical thinking necessary for digital design professions and learn about wireframing for mobility. Students will have direct client experience working with SHS community members, or students as clients in cross program efforts to design products for immediate need. Students will expand their proficiency in the Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign and XD). Students will regularly partake in design critiques. Opportunities for internships are encouraged.
Prerequisite: C or better in Graphic Design 1 or permission of instructor.
